Charity Run Competition Chairperson; Uchu Tomita
Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games / Paris 2024 Paralympic Games Swimming Medalist
My name is Uchu Tomita, and I am the new chairperson of this year’s YMCA International Charity Run.
The purpose of the YMCA International Charity Run is “to support children with disabilities and promote an understanding of what it means to have a disability”. This is the same as my purpose for continuing to participate in para swimming.
As a sophomore in high school, I was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, a rare disease that causes gradual loss of vision. Currently, I can only distinguish between light and dark, and compete as a para swimmer in the most severe category of visual impairment. Through participating in the para swimming, I discovered my potential and have been able to expand my connections with people around me and my peer swimmers. I now believe that an environment where diverse people can spend time together is a natural way of existing in society. As a para-athlete, I am committed to sharing the power of inclusion that sport has. This is also an important part of my life’s work.
When I was in elementary school, I took swimming lessons at the Kumamoto YMCA. Thanks to this connection, when the training facilities were closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I was able to continue training at the YMCA pool and receive support as an athlete. As I wanted to demonstrate my appreciation and give back to the YMCA, I have served as the National Tournament Chair since 2024. Last fall, I attended several tournaments, and the enthusiasm of the people cheering on each other was beyond what I could have imagined. I truly felt that “the joy of running brings smiles to children with disabilities”, which is the essence of these tournaments. This year, as the chairman of the committee, I will work towards further improvement for this wonderful positive energy cycle.
Enjoying sports is a right that should be granted to everyone, and the joy of devoting oneself wholeheartedly to something is an indispensable experience for living a fulfilled life. I want to create a society where people with and without disabilities can enjoy sports together, and I want to build a truly inclusive society where people of all abilities can reach their full potential. I look forward to working together with all of you this year. Thank you for your continued support and cooperation. My name is Uchu Tomita, and I am the new chairperson of this year’s YMCA International Charity Run.
