 Established in London, England in 1844, the YMCA now has over 30 million members in approximately 120 countries and regions. Based on Christian spirituality, the YMCA strives to improve young people's character and to promote harmony of spirit, mind, and body. It is the world's largest organization that serves democratic and peaceful society.

 Since its establishment in 1906, the Korean YMCA in Japan has been advising foreign students about living in Japan, teaching Japanese language, and providing a place for learning and fellowship. Over the years, the Korean YMCA in Japan has produced numerous leaders. With its long tradition and excellent results as its foundation, the YMCA Asian Language Institute was established with an aim to promote international mutual understanding and exchange.

 Located in central Tokyo, the YMCA Asian Language Institute is easily accessible through public transportation. It takes about 30 minutes from Shinjuku, Ginza, Shibuya, the Akihabara electronic district. It is also close to  Ochanomizu and Kanda. This area is known as a "university district" or "academic district" because of　its quiet atmosphere and the many universities, technical schools, and used bookstores in the vicinity.

 The YMCA Asian Language Institute offers a comprehensive Japanese language training program that focuses on reading, listening, writing, and speaking. Students are placed in appropriate levels -beginning, intermediate, advanced- after the YMCA proficiency test. Excerpts from newspapers and videotaped portions of current news are used for further improvement in reading and listening.

 In addition to the language training program, the YMCA Asian Language Institute provides opportunities for learning Japanese culture and history, and Christianity. Based on the YMCA's education concepts, the YMCA Asian Language Institute promotes a wide array of extracurricular activities, such as special lectures, field trips, excursions, and bazaars.

 Outside the classroom, Japanese language tutors volunteer to help students with conversational skills and classroom study on a one-to-one basis. They also answer questions regarding living in Japan and other needs the students might have. In order to deepen understanding of the Japanese culture, the YMCA Asian Language Institute arranges for students to visit Japanese homes. To provide students with hands-on experience with a Japanese family, culture, and customs, an arrangement is made for the students to visit the YMCA members' homes or local area homes.

 For students who wish to enter universities, graduate schools, or technical schools in Japan, orientations and individual counseling are available for proper guidance.

 The YMCA Asian Language Institute does not have its own dormitory, however, we provide assistance in finding dormitories and apartments suitable for foreign students. (Please note that when renting an apartment in Japan, generally you are required to pay five to six months rent before moving in, which includes "gift money")

 After 6 months of studies, students with excellent grades will be considered for a YMCA Asian Language Institute scholarship or tuition reduction according to the school scholarship regulations and guidelines.
